Chapter 73

Courage and Caution

勇于敢则杀,勇于不敢则活。此两者,或利或害。天之所恶,孰知其故?是以圣人犹难之。
天之道,不争而善胜,不言而善应,不召而自来,繟然而善谋。天网恢恢,疏而不失。
Courage that dares to act leads to death; courage that dares not to act leads to life. These two, one beneficial, one harmful. What Heaven dislikes, who knows its reason? Even the sage finds this difficult. The Way of Heaven excels in winning without contending, responds without speaking, comes without being summoned, and plans without urgency. Heaven's net is vast; though its mesh is wide, nothing slips through.

How does it relate to me?

I often feel pressured to act boldly, but this reminds me that restraint can be more powerful. I need to trust that patience and non-contention can achieve more than force.

What should I do today?

Today, before reacting to a challenge, I will pause and consider if inaction or a gentle response is more effective than a forceful one. I will trust Heaven's wide net.
