Chapter 18

When the Great Way Declines

大道废,有仁义;智慧出,有大伪;六亲不和,有孝慈;国家昏乱,有忠臣。
When the great Way is abandoned, there arises benevolence and righteousness. When wisdom and cleverness appear, there arises great hypocrisy. When family relations are not harmonious, there arises filial piety and parental affection. When the country is in chaos, there arise loyal ministers.

Deep Reflection

What is this chapter about?

This chapter points out that virtues like benevolence, righteousness, and loyalty only become prominent when the natural harmony of the Tao is lost. These qualities are symptoms of decline, not the original state of simplicity.

How does it relate to me?

I often focus on fixing problems with rules or labels, but this chapter reminds me to look for root causes. Instead of praising loyalty in a troubled situation, I can work to restore trust and harmony from the start.

What should I do today?

Today, I will address a small conflict by focusing on restoring natural harmony rather than assigning blame or promoting a virtue.
