Chapter 45

Great Perfection Seems Flawed

大成若缺,其用不弊。大盈若冲,其用不穷。
大直若屈,大巧若拙,大辩若讷。
躁胜寒,静胜热。清静为天下正。
Great perfection seems flawed, yet its use is never worn out. Great fullness seems empty, yet its use never ends. Great straightness seems bent, great skill seems clumsy, great eloquence seems stammering. Movement overcomes cold, stillness overcomes heat. Clarity and stillness are the world's standard.

Deep Reflection

What is this chapter about?

This chapter teaches that true greatness appears as its opposite: perfection looks incomplete, fullness looks empty. The highest qualities are humble and unpretentious. Stillness and clarity bring balance to the world.

How does it relate to me?

I often strive to appear perfect, capable, and articulate. This chapter frees me to embrace imperfection. My real strength lies in being grounded and clear, not in showing off. I can let go of the need to impress.

What should I do today?

Today, I will do one task without worrying about perfection, accepting a 'flawed' outcome, and notice the peace that comes from letting go of control.
